Makan Makan

After eating Thai food almost every day in Bangkok, I had a sudden hankering for some Malaysian cuisine.

Being a Google Maps junkie and a Local Guide Level 7 to boot, I opened up the app and typed the words “Malaysian food”. The nearest place to my Sukhumvit Airbnb was a resto bar called Makan Makan. The 200+ almost-5-star reviews were compelling enough for me to check them out.

The map said it would be a 15-minute-ish walk, which I didn’t mind at all. After a good 10 minutes of walking, my friend realized they left their phone at the Airbnb. So off to the Airbnb we merrily went before finally making our way to dinner.

Makan Makan, a phrase meaning “Let’s eat!” in the Malay language, had a nice fine dining vibe that was quite different from any Malaysian restaurant I’ve been to. Their sign says “Contemporary Eurasian Dining”, so I reckon it’s not exactly a Malaysian restaurant but perhaps an Asian Fusion one?

My friend and I didn’t have a reservation, but luckily we arrived early enough to be given a table right away. I do recommend that you reserve a table, though.

We got the Pork Meatball Rendang, Mee Goreng, Chicken Satay, drinks, and ice cream.

Pork Meatball Rendang

Being a noob in Malaysian cuisine, I thought rendang was cooked exclusively with beef. Well, suffice to say Pork Meatball Rendang changed my life.

Mee Goreng

The Mamak Mee Goreng had enough spiciness that I can endure (I’m not really into spicy). I’d dare say it’s similar to Pad Thai, but Malaysian? The lime, chicken and bean sprouts scream Pad Thai, but I thought the Mee Goreng was more aromatic and flavorful.

Chicken Satay

Nothing can be as straightforward as Chicken Satay, but this one was so good. The meat was tender and grilled just right, and the sauce was killer.

Sweet Basil and Mango Lemonade

When the thirst kicks in, go for their lemonades! The Sweet Basil one was pretty good.

Raspberry Ice Cream
Me and my Rum and Raisin Ice Cream lol

To cap off dinner, I had the Rum and Raisin Ice Cream. Not too sweet but super creamy. I couldn’t get enough of it! Their Raspberry Ice Cream was great too.

It’s obvious I loved Makan Makan so much that I had to blog about it. If you’re in Bangkok, definitely give them a visit. You won’t regret it!
